‘A gloriously ghostly and chilling winter treat’ THE STAGE

‘Lloyd Parry is always absorbing, and catches the sense of dread that gives James his originality’ 5 Stars – THE TIMES

This winter, Robert Lloyd Parry brings a seasonal shiver to Larmer Tree Gardens with his retelling of two great tales by M. R. James, the master of the English ghost story.
In Casting the Runes we meet the unforgettable ‘Abbot of Lufford’, Mr Karswell: magic lanternist, historian of the occult and scourge of the academic establishment. The story is perhaps best known for being the source for the classic 1950s horror film Night of the Demon. It is partnered here by one of James’s most neglected masterpieces, The Residence at Whitminster, in which a dark shadow is cast over the precinct of a peaceful English Church . . . Every Christmas, Montague Rhodes James, an eminent medieval scholar, would write and perform new tales to entertain friends in his rooms in King’s College, Cambridge. A century later, the stories by M. R. James thrill, terrify and amuse as powerfully today as they ever did. Robert Lloyd Parry recreates James’s entertainments in a truly atmospheric way, illuminated by candlelight and underscored by dread. On Christmas Day in 2013, Robert Lloyd Parry appeared on television portraying M. R. James in Mark Gatiss’ BBC Two documentary ‘M. R. James: Ghost Writer’.
